Hi everyone!
My name is Heather Leep and I live in Clarksburg, WV. I have been married to my husband, Josh, for ten years. We have two daughters, Rylee and Raegan. Rylee is seven and Raegan is almost two. Rylee keeps me extremely busy, she does competitive cheerleading and it involves a lot of traveling. This is my second semester and I am working towards a Master's of Education with a specialization in reading. I am extremely nervous to be a student again, as I graduated more than ten years ago with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I haven't taught since Rylee was born, so I feel like a fish out of water.
I have always loved to read, often getting into trouble when I was young for sneaking a flashlight to bed and reading under the covers. One book, or series of books, that I will always remember is The Babysitters Club books by Ann M. Martin. These were some of the first books that I read for enjoyment and I could relate to the characters and found them very entertaining. My friends and I even tried to form our own babysitting club after reading the first few books.
I am taking this course mainly because it is required for my degree, but also because I want to learn more about students' responses to literature. I want to be able to help students discover books that they will enjoy reading and help them to love reading as much as I do myself.

Hi Heather! Looking forward to working with you! Don't be nervous! This course will be interesting and fun! You can use Rylee as your Guinea Pig for the strategies we will be learning about in this course. I homeschool my dyslexic son and I will be using the strategies when learn about in our course text with him and sharing my thoughts are their effectiveness with you all as as we move through the course. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns! Do not forget to submit links to your Blog and Blog post to TaskStream so you can get points!
ReplyDeleteHi Heather! I love that you get to stay at home with your daughters. I'm sure that even though you haven't been teaching other children, you have been teaching your daughters so much! I hope that when I have children I will be able to stay at home with them for a few years to enjoy watching them grow up.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to sneaking a flashlight at night to read books. When I was in school, we had the Pizza Hut Book It! Program so I would try to read books at night that way I could fill up the form to turn in and get my free personal pan pizza! I remember eating at Pizza Hut quite a lot!
You are in good company here! I have not yet started to teach and received my last BA in English back in 2011 (but my first was in 2003 lol). I have a 13-month-old daughter named Raylie and we live in Clarksburg too! So we sure have a lot in common!
ReplyDeleteHi Heather! Welcome back! I admire you for being a busy mom and continuing your education! I'm sure it is quite a juggling act; but, it sounds like you are a very driven person who will have no problem accomplishing that task.
ReplyDeleteI never read the "Babysitter's Club" in school; however, I currently have a 2nd grade student who loves those books. I think it's wonderful that some of the older classics, like "The Box Car Children", "Babysitter's Club", "Encyclopedia Brown", and many others, are still beloved books in today's world. I look forward to working with you this semester!
Hi Heather! My 5 year old daughter is Frozen obsessed also. As a matter of fact my 2 year old son is obsessed with Elsa. He got 3 different Olaf blankets for Christmas and his birthday but decided he only wants Sissy's "Ella" blanket. It goes with him every day to school for nap time. Looking forward to an educational semester with you!
ReplyDeleteMegan, I was hooked on the Pizza Hut Book It Program also. I am looking forward to starting the program with my daughter soon.
Hi Heather! Boy, you do seem awfully busy! With my three kids I keep myself quite busy as well. Between school work, basketball, and horse lessons I always feel like I am running and playing catch up! I too was one of those kids who was often "caught" reading after bed time. If I started a book that I enjoyed, which was often, I couldn't seem to put it down. I hope you have a great semester!

Hello! I was a culprit of sneaking reading past my bedtime as well-- I can relate! I'm sure you're anything but a fish out of water. Teaching is one of those things--if you have the heart for it and have routines, it's like riding a bike. Once you get back into the swing of things, you don't forget it!
