Week 7 Activity

I will be using the book that I previously mentioned, The Name Jar by  Yangsook Choi to do the following activities:

I believe that the first activity will help Liv with comprehension because she seems to be able to relate with other people's feelings to understand things.  Activity two focuses on the theme and the sequence of events which will also help me to gauge Liv's comprehension.  The last activity will hopefully help Liv learn some new words and maybe aid in decoding and fluency.

  1. I really like the first strategy because it hits on giving examples and supporting your reasoning, which is something that my students still struggle with in high school. I wonder what order you would do this activities in. Do you think it matters which order you implement these strategies in? I think I would use the last one first and the second one last. I think for my students it helps to build from solid ideas to more abstract, out of the box-thinking ones.

  2. Great advice Caitlin! Heather, I'm glad you also chose to focus on character's feelings! This tends to be a strength for dyslexics! They tend to be into tune to other peoples feelings and I've noticed that my son tends to related to texts on an emotional level even when he struggles to recall specific details and order of events.

  3. I also incorporated the character's feelings into my lesson. I did it by accident because when I got to school, I couldn't remember which lesson I had chosen at that time, but I think it will help build on the lesson of the story which is the other focus I chose. I also agree with Caitlin that working from concrete to abstract would work best! I am interested to see how you chose to work these into your lesson! :)
